Drop-Off Your Waste

We’re dedicated to making recycling and waste management as easy and efficient as possible for our community. Whether you have recyclables, used oil, drywall, or green waste, we’ve got you covered

Recycle your materials on Salt Spring Island

Hey there, eco-warriors of Salt Spring Island! When you recycle, you’re basically giving Mother Nature a big ol’ hug. Swing by our solid waste transfer station, where we happily accept a range of materials to be recycled. Bring us your metal, cardboard, appliances, gadgets, paper, and clean wood. We’ll take care of sorting and processing, ensuring these materials are reborn as fantastic new products in industries like manufacturing and construction.

With your efforts, we’re preserving precious resources, reducing waste, and working towards a greener future for our island. Let’s keep Salt Spring Island beautiful and sustainable together!

Recycling materials we accept:

  • Metal: From cans to scrap metal, we handle all sorts of metal for recycling.
  • Cardboard: Please flatten all boxes to help us process them efficiently.
  • Appliances: Small appliances like toasters and microwaves, as well as larger items, can be recycled.
  • Gadgets: Electronic gadgets that need recycling? Bring them in!
  • Paper: We accept all types of paper, from newspapers to office paper.
  • Clean Wood: Wood that’s free from paint, chemicals, or other contaminants can be recycled.

Used Oil

Salt Spring Garbage & Recycling now accepts motor oil and antifreeze products for recycling at no cost to you. Thanks to a government program, recycling used oil is free for residents. This initiative helps remove financial barriers and promotes eco-friendly practices, supporting our community’s environmental goals.

What We Accept:

  • Used Oil: Drop off up to 4 liters anytime. For 5 liters or more, visit us every Thursday during business hours.
  • Used Antifreeze
  • Oil Filters
  • Oil & Antifreeze Containers

Drywall

Renovating or demolishing? We accept drywall for recycling. Drop off your clean, non-contaminated drywall to help reduce landfill waste and support sustainable building practices.

If you have new gypsum drywall that is date-stamped 1990 or newer and has never been installed (no tape, paint, or mud; sometimes called “cut offs”), bring it to Salt Spring Garbage and Recycling for recycling. We will need to see a date stamp and verify that it is new. If it does not look new and does not have a date stamp, you will need to get it tested.

For used drywall (pre-hung with paint, mud, tape, or texture) or pre-1990 drywall, you must submit an asbestos report showing no asbestos detected. We must have the report on file before you offload the drywall. Each load, regardless of the date, must be accompanied by a signed Declaration and Acknowledgement Form.

Green Waste

Composting is key to a healthy environment. Bring your green waste, including grass clippings, leaves, and garden trimmings. We’ll turn your organic waste into valuable compost for a greener, healthier community.

Garbage

Need to dispose of general household garbage? We’ve got you covered. Our drop-off facility accepts various types of non-recyclable waste. Proper disposal of general garbage helps keep our community clean and safe.

What we accept:

  • Household Waste: Regular garbage that doesn’t fall under recycling categories.
  • Non-Hazardous Materials: Items that are safe to dispose of in a general waste facility.
