Junk Removal & Cleanouts on Salt Spring Island

Clearing out a house, garage, yard or renovation? There are two ways to get rid of junk with us: rent a bin and we haul it away, or bring it to our transfer station at 360 Blackburn Rd.

White Ford F-550 hook-lift truck from Salt Spring Garbage & Recycling, used for bin delivery and hauling on Salt Spring Island

Two ways to get rid of junk

1. Rent a bin: we deliver it, haul it away and weigh it

We drop off a 12-yard bin (for homeowners and small jobs) or a 40-yard bin (commercial customers). Fill it with your junk and debris, call us, and we haul it away and weigh it on our certified scale.

  • 12-yard bin: $250 delivery charge. 12 ft long × 8 ft wide × 4 ft high.
  • 40-yard bin: $650 delivery charge. 20 ft long × 8 ft wide × 8 ft high.
  • Plus the $13 scale fee, $0.41/kg for weight and $10/day (drop-off and pickup days are free), and a 10% operational surcharge on the subtotal, before GST.

Booking isn't instant: send a bin rental request and we'll confirm availability and your date first.

2. Bring it to the transfer station

Load up and bring it to 360 Blackburn Rd, Salt Spring Island, BC V8K 2B8. Loads are weighed on our certified scale: $13 scale fee plus $0.41/kg. Tires are $7.50 each and mattresses or box springs $30 each, plus the $13 fee. See drop-off prices or try the drop-off cost estimator.

Just one or two bags of garbage? Use the bag drop: $7 a bag, maximum 2 bags, no scale fee.

Please note: we haul junk in our rental bins only.

What can go? Common cleanout items

The transfer station accepts almost everything, including:

  • Furniture: couches, chairs, tables, dressers
  • Mattresses and box springs ($30 each at drop-off)
  • Carpets and underlay
  • Appliances: washers, dryers, stoves, fridges and freezers
  • Electronics: TVs, computers, phones
  • Renovation and construction waste: flooring, doors and windows, insulation, roofing materials
  • Yard and green waste: grass, leaves, garden trimmings, stumps and large logs
  • Scrap metal, lawn mowers, tools, and sports and hobby equipment: see scrap metal recycling
  • Tires ($7.50 each at drop-off)

Check the full accepted materials list. Item not listed? Ask at the office window or call 250-537-2167.

What can't go in a bin?

Gas bottles such as propane tanks, and vehicle batteries, are not allowed in bins: bring those to the transfer station instead. Tires and mattresses are allowed in rental bins. See the full list of what's not allowed in bins on this page.

Renovating a home built before 1990?

For renovation or demolition projects on homes built before 1990, a clean asbestos permit is required before bin delivery. Please call us at 250-537-2167 for details.

Usable items? Try the Blackburn Mall

Usable items are set aside at our Blackburn Mall instead of going to the landfill. Usable items are charged the same as regular disposal. Let the yard staff know and they'll show you where they go.

Where do you deliver bins?

We deliver roll-off bins (dumpsters) across Salt Spring Island, from Ganges to Fulford Harbour and Vesuvius Bay. Call 250-537-2167 or request a bin.

NOT ALLOWED IN BINS

  • Asbestos
  • Liquids
  • Paint
  • Oil, oil filters & antifreeze
  • Chemicals

For asbestos, book a dedicated asbestos bin through our asbestos transport form. Paint and chemicals can go to Island Community Services Recycle Depot, 349 Rainbow Rd (250-537-1200).

Drywall is OK: Drywall is accepted at $0.41/kg if it is date-stamped or comes with a test report, and is not mixed with other garbage. If drywall is mixed with other garbage in a bin, the $400 sorting fee applies.

Tires and mattresses are OK: tires and mattresses are allowed in rental bins.

A $400 sorting fee applies to any bin that contains banned materials.
